Dr. Ashley Bourgeois is a board-certified veterinary dermatologist, mom of two, and partner in a busy practice group.
How the heck has she managed to grow her brand, The Derm Vet? How’d she launch her first educational product? We took a minute to ask!
Q: What drives you to create and grow your brand, The Derm Vet?
A: My passion is teaching other veterinarians how to practice better dermatology.
Dermatology helps us improve the lives of more pets. Knowing we are all busy, I try to provide many different avenues to learn. (I teach) between social media, my podcast, lectures, my website, etc.
Q: What’s the most exciting opportunity that having a brand has brought you?
A: The connections! I have met so many different people that would not have come into my life if not for building my brand. The veterinary social media family is a fun and supportive group.
Q: What’s the hardest part of building a brand?
A: Whenever you open yourself up publicly, there is going to be criticism. There are ALWAYS going to be people you reach and some you don’t. As you gain experience, you learn to focus on the audience that is going to jive with you.

Q: Any pro tips for building a brand as a busy mom?
A: Outsource when you can! (Consider) simple things, like splurging to have your house cleaned or having someone help make a graphic. Figure out what is worth it to you.
I have a tendency to want to do it all. Once you gain momentum, you have to focus on the things you are good at and passionate about. Inevitably, you are going to have to let go of some things.
Q: Why did you choose to focus on cytology for your first educational product?
A: I paid attention to my audience. I was getting asked over and over again after I lectured how to collect a cytology. If you are an expert in a certain field – whatever that is for you – remember that your audience has to know the basics first.
I also liked the idea of providing something for the entire veterinary field. The cytology guide is for doctors, technicians, assistants, CSRs, etc.
